AVELING & PORTER ROAD TRACTOR AND STEAM LORRY

Thomas Aveling along with Richard Porter founded their company in 1858. They were pioneers in the field of steam road haulage and were the originators of the modern “horn” plate. Aveling-Barford were the direct descendants of the original company and continued for many years producing heavy earth moving equipment, although not at the original works. The A&P factory became the home for Wingets, manufacturers of plant and equipment for the construction industry, which in time also closed.

The site of the Aveling Works close to Rochester Bridge and bordering the River Medway now has the modern offices of Medway Council in its place. However, the Aveling & Porter past has not been forgotten, as references to A&P are displayed in the foyer, along with archive material available for inspection by appointment. It is understood the Council still owns an Aveling Traction Engine, although its condition is unknown

So it is perhaps right that Maxitrak, based in Staplehurst, some 25 miles or so from the old Aveling & Porter works in Rochester should select this make to base their traction engine and steam lorry on.

Burrells

The Burrell range of Traction Engines are widespread and popular in preservation with many examples appearing at Steam Rallies up and down the country throughout the season.

Maxitrak have chosen the Burrell, built in 1914, as being typical of the best of British Traction Engine design. There are three variations of the engine available, being the Agricultural, Road, and the Showman, each having the option of being fired by gas or coal.

All models are authentic in every detail available in Ready to Run format, or as a fully machined painted or un-painted kit. They are all fully equipped with safety valve, pressure gauge, regulator, and reversing lever. The boiler is copper silver soldered and complete with test certificate.

Kits are available in stages in quantities from 2 to 12, to suit builders wishing to spread the work or budget over longer periods. Full details are supplied with our Catalogue.

Atkinson

The pioneering Atkinson “Standard” Waggon was produced from 1916 to the mid-1920`s and was one of the most popular and successful “undertype” steam lorry designs.

The model of the Atkinson faithfully reproduces the vertical boiler, twin cylinders under the chassis frame with chain drive to the rear axles, via the differential.

The Maxitrak Atkinson is complete with regulator/reverser and steering controlled by radio control that is supplied with every model.
